General info
Microsoft DOS 5.0 is a legacy operating system for pc. MS-DOS 5 offers new features compared to previous versions, such as a full screen text editor EDIT and Microsoft QBasic. MS-DOS 5 also supports 2.88 MB 3.5" diskettes as well as hard disks up to 2 GB in size. It is the last version that was released on 3.5'' 720K (DS/DD) diskettes. The memory management is rewritten to allow DOS to utilize the High Memory Area and Upper Memory Area to reduce its usage of conventional memory. This release of DOS is the last of the collaboration between Microsoft and IBM and as a result the last where PC-DOS and MS-DOS are near-identical. This is also the version of DOS used in the OS/2 and Windows NT virtual DOS machine.

The idea behind it is to help vintage computer enthusiasts (without the necessary equipment to create physical media) installing MS-DOS from physical media, that is no longer being offered, marketed nor supported by Microsoft nor by any retail stores for many years and therefore can be considered as abandonware.
